QUARTERDECK SHIPS QEMM VERSION 7,
MANIFEST VERSION 2, DESQview VERSION 2.6 AND
DESQview 386 VERSION 2.6
New QEMM features more memory free for programs, MS-DOS 6 multiple
configuration and DoubleSpace support, enhanced MS Windows support, ease
of setup, enhanced hardware compatibility including Pentium.
SANTA MONICA, Calif., June 15, 1993 -- Quarterdeck Office Systems, Inc.
(NASDAQ:QDEK) today announced the release and shipment of version 7 of the
Quarterdeck Expanded Memory Manager (QEMM), the number one selling memory
manager for DOS and Microsoft Windows users, as well as new versions of its
Manifest system analysis program and its DESQview and DESQview 386 DOS
multitaskers. The new versions of all of the products feature advances in
memory management, network support and enhanced hardware compatibility.
QEMM version 7 offers significant gains in the amount of memory free for
running programs through its new DOS-Up feature that moves the DOS kernel,
resources and data above 640K freeing 7-70K, its Stealth DoubleSpace feature
that frees 40K of memory on systems running Microsoft's DOS 6 DoubleSpace
disk compressor, and its VIDRAM for Windows feature that provides as much as
736K for running DOS text programs inside MS Windows.
QEMM 7 also offers support for DOS 6 multiple configuration files, enhanced
MS Windows, Stacker and SuperStor support, express installation, a new QEMM
Setup feature for changing QEMM parameters, editing configuration files and
getting online help and hints, built-in DPMI support, and enhanced hardware
compatibililty including Pentium, battery-powered notebooks and bus-mastering
controllers.
"Each year memory management becomes more and more important," said
Therese E. Myers, president/CEO and co-founder of Quarterdeck. "Now with
MS-DOS 6 and its memory-intensive utilities, with multimedia PCs and their
hardware drivers for CD ROMs and sound, not to mention networks with the need
for enterprise computing, there's less and less memory free to run programs.
QEMM 7's purpose is to alleviate these problems.
"With QEMM 7, we have once again made important memory management
breakthroughs", continued Myers. "Whereas in past releases we concentrated on
finding every usable address of memory, in QEMM 7 we concentrated on breaking
through the memory boundaries to be able to run more TSRs and drivers than there
are available addresses. Our Stealth DoubleSpace feature is a breakthrough of
this kind."
Also released today is Manifest version 2, which is included with QEMM 7 and
DESQview, or can be purchased separately. The new version of Manifest
provides reporting and analysis of networks, battery-support, the Pentium
processor and MS Windows. In response to user request, Manifest also supports
the editing of configuration files.
The new releases of DESQview and DESQview 386 feature enhanced network
support, including support for Netware Lite and LANtastic servers and other
peer-to-peer networks, as well as "under-the-hood" compatibility and
performance enhancements. Both DESQview and DESQview 386 include Manifest.
DESQview 386 also includes QEMM 7.
QEMM 7 is also incorporated into DESQview/X version 1.1. Users who purchased
DESQview/X 1.1 after April 15, 1993 can receive an upgrade to QEMM 7 for $5
shipping and handling. The suggested list price of QEMM 7 is $99.95. In the
